I've Finished!

...not a marathon... not a 30K... not even a short 327 yard fun run like my daughter recently...

instead, what I refer to is ...

Harry Potter!

I loved the whole series - and like those who've finished before me - I vow not to reveal the ending or other details.

I can say, however, that it is certainly good to have closure. A great story. I'd love to sit with J.K. Rowling and get to know her on a personal level - get to know how she came up with the story. Did she have the entire 7 book series mapped out before she began to write The Sorcerer's Stone? Or, have the subsequent books developed over time?

Like with all trilogies or series books, I am sad that they've come to an end. But, for me, I know I'll get to relive the journey when my own children become avid readers themselves. :)

  1. finally you're done :) well i read that she had the ending planned right from the beginning. Incredible ain't it, how she kept such a complex plot knit together.

  2. I have not read any of her books. I thought they were for younger readers.(I have no children.) But with all this hype, I'm going to check out the first book from the library and give it a read.

  3. Phew! The only Potter fix I get is through the movies :-)

  4. Oh man they are such great books. I also read somewhere that she had the ending planned from day 1. That's so hard to believe though because the books were spread out over such a long time. But I'm glad there's finally closure.

  5. Akshaye & Jess ~ I vaguely remember reading something like that as well. It is just amazing to me. I can't even imagine writing a smaller 100 page book let alone 7 (3 with over 700 pages)! This is what amazes me. They were all so well done... well thought out... great details but not overwhelming/mundane or drawn out explainations. Every book kept you reading and turning the page... eager to know more.

Kara & Wes ~ DH doesn't read but enjoys the movies. :) I'm going to get him the final 2 books on CD so he can listen while he commutes to work. The books are great, though! :)

  7. Yep, she had the whole thing thought out from the get-go. Of course it was in big brush strokes so some of the details had to come as she was writing the individual books. Here's an article with more closure on the HP series http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/topstories/2007/07/31/jk-what-happens-to-harry-89520-19545398/ (better copy and paste the entire link in your browser). -- Kong

  8. Hooray! I thought the conclusion of the series was fantastic. I've been spending a crazy amount of time watching and interview with JK online since finishing the book. The Today Show interview's a good one, and there's a long transcript on mugglenet you might like. She gives a lot of details about the epilogue that weren't included in the book.

  9. Thank you Akshaye - I watched the entire interview... very interesting and informative. JK is an amazing woman. :)

  11. Well B! has finished as well. It took me 2 days nice not having to go into work anymore!! D'oh!! Well I loved the book and the way it finished up was very nice! Can't say much more without giving away some things so I'll keep my mouth shut. The books on CD are what the Wife likes to do as she doesn't always have time to read but has plenty of time to listen. She enjoys them very much as she likes the way the guy who does them all does it.
