I have been wanting a bunad for a very long time. When we were in Norway this past year, I looked into purchasing one but the cost was prohibitive and I was heartbroken. I considered making one for myself but even the patterns and materials are pricey.
Fortunately, I found an alternative ... a festdrakt bunad. Festdrakts are costumes that are similar to bunads but are not historically accurate nor approved by the Norwegian Committee on Folk Costumes. They are less expensive than the bunad, but are still pretty and very Scandinavian looking. Though controversial to purists ... a festdrakt suits me just fine.
